The illusion of being a song that progresses is what makes this tune awesome!

samulis responds:

The style I write is too dynamic to remain linear throughout... I often end up making songs dynamic throughout without the intent of creating a progression, for instance, this one goes from A minor to C major around 0:36 with underpinnings of that minor, giving a good feel of progress from darkness into light.

I'm glad you like the piece, I am working on a song version right now that will be longer and more developed.

Has a very Russian feel, even beyond the fact that it's a Russian song. Very impressive work using OpenMPT as a DAW. It might be a bit nicer if the tempo went up for a bit.

Keep up the awesome work.

Thank you so much Christopher.

Not baaad. It's nice to know you had a thing for GB back in the day.

Hikari responds:

hehe

When I heard this in-game, composer Tomohito Nishiura immediately came to mind. I really thought that this came from one of the games he composed for, it sounded so close. I about went as far as to think it was recorded from the PS2s audio synthesizer, as it sounded that close to the work he did for the PS2 game Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Chronicle).

Sir, I really believe this needs to be a soundtrack on BandCamp or something, with the custom designed album 'n' everything. It's absolutely warming to hear what sounds like it was heavily inspired by Nishiura-san.

Dear FaeryTaleAdventurer.

Someone else mentioned DarkCloud. I have never played it or heard the music! I just did a search and I really enjoy his music! Beautiful. He is now my new influence.
(Nobuo Uemetsu / Joe Hisaishi are also my favorites)

That's good if it sounds like his stuff I guess, because I dig his work.

I really like the sound of this! Much about the sound(s) makes me think this was done with a module tracker like Renoise.

With regards to your question, I think it depends on the software that you use to convert the tracks. I dunno, maybe you could "override" the delay, by having the .mp3 converted in a program like Audacity?

That's the best I can think of! The looping sounds fine here, I don't even notice a delay at all!

-FaeryTaleAdventurer

demofreak responds:

Yes, thanks for the review FaeryTaleAdcenturer, I did notice that there is no longer a delay after i fiddled with putting it as a loop from the song/loop option, and the delay happily disappeared :)

(Putting it out there i did put it on Audacity and cut the delay, but when i convert to mp3 format it makes a delay that is noticeable in a loop;)

Lovely job

I think this song in a way reflects the style of Epic Battle Fantasy II's title theme best. The melody's just slightly different, but other than that very much like EBF II, but with drums.

With regards to the drums, I thought it'd be nice to have a snare in there that would have a big massive bass/reverb/echo (a very beautiful atmospheric sound) effect, to better balance everything out, if not just for the sake of the drums! I'd add it every third beat if given half the chance.

And perhaps in that case even throw in a nice little bass line. Oh, I'm starting to get carried away here, but I just feel that there's a way to really bring out the song in a more whole way.

In terms of your "minimalism" approach, I'd suggest giving a song like Ragnarok Online's title song or even that of Granado Espada's a listen. These are great examples of the ability to maximize the "less is more" feel.

Phyrnna responds:

You, sir, hit that nail right on its head! I was certainly aiming for the style from EBF2's intro. While I can also certainly imagine the song being better with an additional bassline, snares, maybe an acoustic guitar, I wanted to keep it simple. :)

A sleeper success

Wow, I may feel tired now, but this feels like a nice "conclusion" to the whole load of songs I listened to earlier. One of the drugs that seems to offer a little taste of all the others.

Voices, drums, pie-ano, and gee-tar? It's the works in this, with a big side of [insert random psychedelic drug here].

I feel like I'm in so many different places at once. I feel like I'm at a beach, drinking a margarita, watching ghosts flying over my head.

I hear a big influence of "Sofa Surfers (Richard Dorfmeiester Remix)" coming from this, if you ask me. A fine tune, if you haven't heard it.

Rest well, and hopefully this review will be the wake-up call you've been looking for.

I may be out of it now, but I definitely feel a RUSH!

-FTA

uint responds:

It was a very nice way to wake up indeed. For once I tried my best at creating some music and I have to say those reviews are very rewarding.

It's interesting, because I had none of the images you described in my head when coming up with this piece. They do fit though.

I checked out the song. I really like this sort of chillout stuff. Now you should check out Jazzanova - Coffee Talk if you don't know it. It's a bit more on the experimental and mysterious side, but still fairly relaxing if you ask me.

Thanks!

My mind actually went blank

Great use of instruments, I listened to the song in full one time around, and only remember the beginning and ending (nice loop on that, btw).

For the time you had left on it, I kind of hear the psyche feeling a bit warped and unnatural in some spots.

The sax feels as random as it does feel appropriate for this song. Keep doing what you're doing, BLK.

blackzilver responds:

Heey im glad actually understood what i was trying to do with this song. And also thanks for the review :)
Very thankfull!

Don't try and belittle your competition. I don't smell weed, I smell fear. :P

Best of luck to you in the competition. Thank you for your review, and for stopping by.

Just a person that one day looks forward to making music for games.
